Toad in the Hole with Onion Gravy Recipe

An easy to make dish that your friends and family will love

A traditional dish that is easier to make than you may think.


For the batter:
2 eggs
100g plain flour
150ml semi-skimmed milk

For the toad:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
8 pork sausages
1 onion, finely sliced

For the gravy:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 onion, finely sliced
2 teaspoons English mustard
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons flour
300ml vegetable stock

Recipe Instructions

Make the batter.
Place the flour and the eggs in a large bowl and mix the milk in slowly to make a smooth batter. Add 150ml water and beat in a mixer until smooth.

Make the toad.
Place the sausages in an ovenproof dish and scatter the sliced onions over the top. Place in a preheated oven at 220C and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and pour over the batter. Return to the oven and bake for another 35 minutes.

Make the gravy.
Fry the onions in a little oil for 5 minutes until golden. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the gravy has thickened. Add the mustard and Worcestershire sauce add the stock gradually stirring constantly until it is smooth.

To serve.
Serve with the toad in the hole and steamed vegetables.
