Onion Wine, A Simple Recipe

Surprising, isn’t it, that there is such a thing as wine made of onions.  But the fact is, there is.  They’re not just simple to make, they also taste great.

This simple onion wine recipe is easy and delicious.  All you need are the following ingredients:

  • Half a pound of onions, peeled and chopped
  • Half a pound of potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • A pound of raisins, chopped
  • 2 and ½ pounds of granulated sugar
  • 8 pints of water
  • A teaspoon of yeast nutrient
  • A teaspoon of acid blend
  • Activated wine yeast
  • 1 Campden tablet

Boil the onions and potatoes in a pot of water and let it simmer for half an hour.  After that, take them out and strain them in a fermentation container.  Make sure all the juice of the potatoes and onions are extracted.

Use boiling water, top up the mixture to make one gallon.  Add all the other ingredients – raisins, sugar, yeast nutrient, acid blend, and Campden tablet.  However, do not add the wine yeast yet.  Take note to dissolve the sugar completely.

Let the mixture cool to room temperature.  When it does, add the activated wine yeast.  Let it sit for at least four days, making sure to stir the mixture twice a day – once in the morning and once at night.

After four days have passed, strain the mixture again.  Pour the strained liquid in a sterilized demijohn and rack for three weeks.

Rack the fermented wine two more times with an interval of three months.  After a year, the wine should be clear.  You can now put the wine in bottles.  To achieve the best possible results, let the wine sit for another six months before taste-testing.
