A Good and Simple Onion Bhaji Recipe

A spicy surprise for thos who loves spicy dishes

Onion Bhaji is a spicy Indian snack consisting of fried onions and is usually served as a side dish for various Indian meals.


1 large onion; peeled and chopped into fine strips
2 large tablespoons plain flour
Vegetable oil for deep frying
½ teaspoon garam masala
½ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon ground cumin
Pinch of salt

Optional ingredients:
Finely chopped coriander
Finely chopped green chillies
Finely chopped fresh mint leaves

Recipe Instructions

Make the paste.
Place the flour, salt and spices into a mixing bowl and add enough cold water.  Mix together well to form a thick paste.  Add the onion strips and mix well.  For extra flavour add the green chillies, mint leaves and coriander and mix well.

Cook the balls.
Heat the oil until sizzling.  Drop egg-sized balls of the mixture into the hot oil and allow them to cook for 8 – 10 minutes until they are golden brown.  Remove with a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels.
